SMK Muara Tuang Wins Gold Davey Award for "Make the Change"

Winning Category: Social Video-Public Service and Activism

SMK Muara Tuang School in Sarawak, Malaysia, in collaboration with the David Z Foundation, Global Lighthouse Studios, and Globally Empowered, has embarked on an extraordinary journey to inspire change and action through creating original music.

As recent recipients of a fully funded grant for the Medley Music International Program, the students completed a semester of project based learning the song "Make the Change," highlights Sustainable Development Goal 13 (SDG 13) on Climate Action and aims to empower youth and encourage local communities worldwide to make a sustainable difference.

Creating Conversations through Music:

"Make the Change" is not just a song; it is also an authentic story, a showcase of local talent and community values, a call to action, and a conversation starter. Music has the incredible power to evoke emotions, connect people, and inspire change. This project highlights collaboration by emphasizing the word "We":

We can move,

We can do something to save the animals, to save the trees, and to save us.

We can make the change.

This nuanced approach really demonstrates that there is no one initiative that will yield ultimate sustainability. As these students demonstrated by taking action to start a conversation through song, the aphorism "teamwork makes the dream work" rings true.

Youth Empowerment and Agency:

One of the most significant aspects of the "Make the Change" project is the emphasis on youth empowerment. SMK Muara Tuang School and its partners believe that involving young people in climate action is essential for long-term change. By giving youth the opportunity to express themselves through music, the project empowers them to take an active role in shaping their future.

Another hallmark of the video is showcasing traditional dance and instrumentation in the music video. The dance was choreographed and performed by students, and the Sape part was composed and performed my students.

Building a Sustainable Future Together:

In a world facing environmental challenges, it is collaborations like this music video that serve as beacons of hope, reminding us that we can "Make the Change" and create a more sustainable world for future generations.

We are so thankful for this achievement with winning a gold Davey Award, and we are thrilled that the opportunity will help to amplify this important work!
